Denying equal access to marriage deprives LGBT people of critical rights, protections and responsibilities and violates our state's fundamental guarantee of equality for everyone. Marriage provides a comprehensive package of economic and social protections to couples and their children. In 2004, the U.S. General Accounting Office listed 1,138 ways in which marital relationships are given special treatment by the federal government. Project Equality works to educate the university community on social, economic and political inequalities which impact the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities of Iowa and to produce accurate and accessible resources regarding these inequalities.
